"To Destroy the Vexatious Demon Which Hath Inturbulated the Peace of the Dreaming Gentleman"
The Anti-Cipher Society was an organization dedicated to Bill Cipher's destruction. Founded by Thurburt Mudget Waxstaff III, the organization's existence was short-lived. Nevertheless, it had pioneered a few methods to combat against Bill, including the Bill-Hunting Suit and the Anti-Cipher tonic.
The Founder[]
The society was founded and financed by Thurburt Mudget Waxstaff III. Waxstaff worked as a copywriter in Illinois before being contacted by Bill. Having struggled to develop a slogan for "Whitman's Wax and Horse-Calming Tonic", Waxstaff was eager to accept help from a demon. After attaining the American Dream by marrying his boss's wife, Waxstaff would again be contacted by Bill. The demon demanded a favor in return; Waxstaff would invest in the creation of an Interdimensional Portal, through which Bill could escape the Nightmare Realm.
However, Waxstaff was unable to build the portal, which incurred the wrath of Bill and and caused him to suffer a series of terrible nightmares. Desperate for a solution, Waxstaff put out an ad in the newspaper.
Formation[]
Four people responded to Waxstaff's ad: Father Tinsley O'Pimm, Horace Broadshoulder, Jessamine Delilah Gulch, and Abigale Blackwing. These four had encountered Bill before, which ended in banishment, firing, divorce or despair, and hence they all seek revenge against Bill. The group attempted an exorcism of Bill by summoning him, and O'Pimm was possessed. Bill in O'Pimm again tried to convince the four others to build the portal so they could rule over the wasterlands, but they all rejected the offer by drawing their pistols at O'Pimm. After Bill left O'Pimm's body, the five swore an oath to defeat Bill, and hence the society was established.
Research[]
The Society came up with several methods to combat Bill, Including but not limited to:
- The Bill-Hunting Suit
- The Anti-Cipher Tonic
Although these are laughable by today's standards, the Anti-Cipherites were able to display enough inventiveness to get invited to the 1901 Inventioneer's Fair. It was here that Waxstaff would make his case to the scientific community and the President.
Disbandment[]
The Anti-Cipher Society was disbanded shortly after they were declared a laughingstock at the fair. The Anti-Cipherites would go their separate ways, with Thurburt Mudget Waxstaff III being committed to an insane asylum and Abigale Blackwing moving out west, presumably marrying to a Northwest.
Trivia[]
- The character of Jessamine Delilah Gulch is likely a reference to the real life sharpshooter Annie Oakley.
- The character of Abigale Blackwing is said to have married into an impressive fortune with a mansion out west. This might be a nod to the Northwest Family. Later on This Is Not A Website Dot Com (by keying in MATPAT), her full name was mentioned on the board in a small video of MatPat.
Goofs[]
- It is stated that Waxstaff was first contacted by Bill on February 3rd, 1901, However, it is later stated that the Anti-Ciper Society attended the 1901 Inventioneer's Fair on the 22nd of January.
- It is said that Theodore Roosevelt was the President at the time of the Inventioneer's Fair, on January 22, 1901. However, Roosevelt would not become President until September of that year, after the Assassination of William McKinley.
