Manos: The Hands of Fate

The hand witch's robe is identical to that of "The Master" from the movie "Manos: The Hands of Fate. This is a very obscure reference, so how likely do you think it is that is really is a reference and not just a coincidence? "It's in the name, son!: "Be Natural!" 01:57, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

It looks very deliberate. The episode covering Manos is considered one of MST3K's best episodes. And that cloak is much too similar to be coincidental. YazzyDream★ 04:29, September 29, 2014 (UTC)

We've got DJ OK, Edgy Triangle, Dracula Weekday, Boyz II Infantz, and Boston Massachusetts listed as references.

extremely vague

I feel like some of these references should be removed because they're so vague or generic and little to no proof to support them other than "that's similar to something that happened in this show/movie."

Here are some I think should potentially be removed unless we find sources or that we should edit to specify.

• The magazines in Stan's trunk (e.g. "Fully Clothed Women") are a reference to adult magazines such as Playboy. = Really vague and not specific to anything in particular. Saying it's an allusion to dirty magazines is like saying that Dipper's books are allusions to books
• The episode resembles It, which featured a close-knit group battling a shape shifting evil in a subterranean setting. The Shape Shifter in the episode assumes a giant spider form multiple times - like Its final form - and appears to take similar pleasure in psychological torment of its nemeses. = There's a similar setting and the monster looks kind of similar and likes torturing people. That's every horror movie ever.
• When Wendy yells to the shapeshifter, "Hey, Body Snatcher!" it is a nod to the film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers. = That is no proof whatsoever.
• Manly Dan says "Who put that wall there?!" which is a reference to the line "Who put that bar there?!" from the movie please include movie name. = If you don't even know the name of the movie it shouldn't be there.
• One of the obstacles at Ye Royal Discount Putt Hutt is a large shoe house, a reference to the nursery rhyme "There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe." = There's a big shoe house. Not proof of a reference imo
• Some elements of the episode are similar to The Simpsons episode "Dead Putting Society", in which Bart Simpson enters a mini-golf competition with Todd Flanders at a medieval-themed golf course. = Not specific enough. Also medeival mini-golf courses aren't all that uncommon. I can think of other cartoons that have had plots like this where rivals go at it in things like mini-golf
• Gabe claiming to be the "Master of Puppets" is a reference to the song with the same name by Metallica. = Reeeeeeally vague
• The scene where Dipper wakes up from his first meeting with Bill and flails his arm in a panic is an allusion to Kermit the Frog.
  • The same for Dipper's angry face as a puppet when speaking to Mabel, who finds the expression hilarious. = The second part, maybe but the flailing the arms part isn't cutting it for me.
• Will E. Badger's name is possibly a reference to the Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote. = If you have to say "possibly" it probably shouldn't be there.
• Mabel removing her sunglasses making it reveal another pair underneath is a reference to a scene in the movie Airplane!. = I have seen that in a lot of different things.
• The ending credits sequence is a reference to the film The Hangover. = I'm fine with keeping this but it should be more specific for people who've never seen this movie.
• The redecoration scene in Hands Off is a parody of home makeover programs . = Again, extremely vague.
• The song Soos is listening to is by a rapper called Lil Bigg Dawggg, which could be a possible allusion to Lil Wayne, The Notorious B.I.G., and Snoop Dogg. = "possibly" and not not specific
• McGucket's middle name is a nod to the Large Hadron Collider. = Why? My brother's middle name is Joseph. My parents weren't trying to make a nod to Michael Joseph Jackson or Jim Joseph Parson or Jared Joseph Leto or something.
• Mabel's sweater showing a yellow dog stretching may be an allusion to Jake the Dog of Adventure Time . = Or it's just a wiener dog. Seeing as it looks nothing like Jake, I'm gonna go withi t just being a wiener dog.
  • Also, McGucket's descent into madness references Simon Petrikov's transformation into the Ice King. = What even?
• Some signs in the background in the future say "The Time Baby is Watching," a reference to George Orwell's book 1984. = again specify how it's a reference
• The water gun Robbie uses is a Super Soaker. = or it's just a water gun
• In the Globnar battle arena, there is a competitor that appears to be infinitely falling between two portals, which is possibly a reference to the game series Portal. = there's that word "possibly" again
• The Time Baby refers to the combatants as "Tributes," as in what they are referred to in the Hunger Games series.
  • Additionally, the sky of the Globnar arena resembles a grid, similar to the sky inside the Hunger Games arenas. = unless there's a source for either of these things I would say no. Hunger Games isn't exactly original. There's a ton of things that have "tributes" so it isn't necessarily a Hunger Games nod.
• The guard towers outside the Infinetentiary are Penrose triangles, two-dimensional figures impossible to project into the third dimension. = what's even the point of this one?
• The photo on Tambry's phone is an allusion to the popular duckface and selfie. = The duckface one MAYBE. But the selfie? Unless they actually say "selfie" then it's just a picture she took of her self.
• The rising of Grunkle Stan's hot air balloon is an allusion to the anime Attack on Titan'. = again I don't see how this is a reference
• When blood comes out of the walls, it could be an allusion to how blood came out of walls in The Amityville Horror. = Blood comes out of the walls in a lot of horror-themed shows and movies. Heck one of Austin and Ally's halloween episode had blood coming from the walls
• In addition to this reference, it also may be referential to how Jason Ritter played a character in Freddy Vs. Jason. = Or it's a reference to the fact that Freddy Krueger is an infamous character

Hand Throne

I fail to see how this resembles the throne from Game of Thrones, other than it being shaped like a chair, but I don't watch Game of Thrones (I just searched an image of the throne on the Internet), so is there anything I'm missing that someone can elaborate for me? Aren't the pizza store animatronics in "Soos and the Real Girl" a reference to the "five nights at freddies" series? Haven't played it yet, but it seems rly similar. Creepy looking animatronics in a pizza store going mad sounds pretty similar and the manager saying "You couldn't handle the hardcore life of a pizza-robot manager" specifies it again while also imlying that it's not easy to work there. Platurt (talk) 14:00, July 8, 2015 (UTC)Platurt

Vague Allusions

Some of these allusions are too vague. It's not sufficient to say "When Stan ate a banana it is a reference to 'An Example Film'.", because if you haven't seen "An Example Film", you have no idea how this is a reference. What it should say is "When Stan ate a banana it is a reference to the scene in 'An Example Film' in which Example Character ate a banana." Now I know that some character in this film did something similar to what Stan did, and thus that this is an allusion. Here are the allusions I've seen that are too vague. If you know what they are talking about, please edit them to show what the allusion is.

Soos and the Real Girl

• The ending credits sequence is a reference to the film The Hangover.

Not What He Seems

• One of Stan's aliases is "Forrester" which is a reference to Game Of Thrones. (What is "Forrester"? A character? A place? How do I know it's not a reference to Dr. Forrester from "Mystery Science Theater 3000" or the Ford Forrester?)

A Tale of Two Stans

• The magazine on Stanley's bed titled "Wuh?" is a reference to Mad Magazine. The person on the cover of the magazine is a reference to Alfred E. Neuman.

The Stanchurian Candidate

• The opening of act three is a parody of the "Staying Alive" scene from the film Saturday Night Fever.
• The monitor worn by Bud Gleeful is based off of Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (Could we explain what Krang is and how it is similar to the monitor?)

"Betty and Barney were here"

This was written in a cryptogram on a pipe in the UFO in the episode "Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future." I think this is a Flinstones reference but there isn't a whole lot of evidence except for the names. I'd like some more opinions on this. OnlyOnTuesdays88 talk 23:16, October 16, 2015 (UTC)
