Giant Vampire Bats are creatures portrayed in Journal 3. The Latin name for the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is written beneath a sketch of a giant bat on the same page.
History
Some point before the events of the series, Ford came across and studied the creatures, recording their powers and appearance in said book.
There is one seen behind Grunkle Stan when he, Dipper, Mabel, Wendy, and Soos gather around the campfire during the theme song.
Season 1
In "Tourist Trapped," when Dipper is going through some of Journal 3s pages, their entry is briefly seen.
In "Land Before Swine," after Soos kills the fairy, their entry page in Journal 3 is seen again.
Season 2
In "Scary-oke," when Dipper finds out about the invisible ink in journal 3, with the invisible ink it is revealed that the Vampire Bats are actually fruit bats. Over the word 'VAMPIRE' the author wrote 'FRUIT.' He sketched out a pear and grapes on either side of the bat illustration. And crossed out the eyes of the bat head drawing. Over the detailed notes he wrote a new message which is underlined.
A real one is seen in "Northwest Mansion Mystery," appearing on the front cover of the newspaper that Preston Northwest is reading. Sheriff Blubs, Deputy Durland and Dipper are on the paper too, and Dipper is seen trying to electrocute the creature.
In "Weirdmageddon 2: Escape From Reality," the page for the giant vampire bats in Journal 3 is shown when Bill's eye flashes through the journal's pages.
Appearance
As stated in Journal 3 they have a ten feet wingspan, which is longer than the average human height of six feet. They seem to resemble a very large Common Vampire Bat. Besides the size, the only real difference is the large, hairy tuft on its head, which other vampire bats lack.
