This is a list of all the references in other media that Gravity Falls has had.

Television and Film[]

  • Gravity Falls was referenced on MAD, an animated series from Cartoon Network. In Men in Black to the Future-Pokemon of Interest, episode 10 of the show's third season, the segment entitled Pokemon of Interest begins with one character telling another that he knows every line from every episode of Gravity Falls, adding that it is a show on Disney and that it's "pretty good...whatever." He then proceeds to explain that their mission involves interacting with a secret computer program the government uses to track its citizens. Images of individuals being tracked by the program include several Gravity Falls characters and a bulletin board containing images of Dipper, Mabel, Wendy, Stan, and Soos with the words "Gravity Falls" appearing in the background.
  • During Jon Stewart's interview with Elisabeth Moss, Moss asks Stewart if he watches cartoons. Stewart, mocking embarrassed, denies, "even though they're totally interesting, and Gravity Falls has all these incredible plotlines."
    • According to Kristen Schaal (who is one of Stewart's "correspondents,") Jon Stewart has a dog named Dipper.[1]
  • In the 2nd episode of the 6th season of the ABC series Private Practice, one of the characters can be seen watching Gravity Falls with his kid while they eat breakfast. The episode they're watching is Headhunters.
  • In the finale of Adventure Time, "Come Along With Me", a sign, saying "TRUST NO ONE," can be seen between the door and a window of BMO's future residence.
    • This would make sense, since many of the cast and crew who worked on Adventure Time also worked on Gravity Falls, including Niki Yang, who voiced BMO on Adventure Time and Candy on Gravity Falls.
  • At some point, in the Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty episode "Anubis Newbie", you can see pyramids resembling Bill Cipher; his resemblance has his hat missing and his bowtie replaced by a neck tie.
  • In the video "Drawn and Quartered - Worst Punishments In History of Mankind" produced by the YouTube channel, The Infographics Show, Dipper has a cameo.
  • In the BYUtv series American Ride, in episode seven of season eight, host Stan Ellsworth visits Redwood National Park. As he leans on a guardrail, an image of Bill Cipher done in black paint or marker is visible on the railing.[2]This drawing of Bill was actually left by Alex Hirsch and the show crew in 2013, during a 4 day long road trip across the Pacific Northwest. [3]
  • In the Wander Over Yonder episode "The Cartoon", Lord Dominator is seen watching "Mystery Kids Mysteries," a space-alien version of Gravity Falls.
  • Star vs. the Forces of Evil:
    • In "Starstruck", several background characters from Gravity Falls appear as tourists at the Echo Creek Mud Pits.
    • In "Trial by Squire", the gnomes make an appearance in Star and Marco's shopping cart.
  • In the Future-Worm! series finale, there is a sequence where the main characters Danny Douglas and Future-Worm are travelling through different dimensions, which results in cameos from various other Disney XD show locations and characters. One of the locations ends up being Gravity Falls, with Dipper, Mabel and Grunkle Stan present. The scene reuses animation from the episode "Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons" and is located in front of an alternate scene with the Mystery Shack. The recycled animation has Dipper looking in the direction of the Future-worm characters, implying that he likely was the only one to notice their presence.
  • In the DuckTales series finale, a drawing of Bill can be seen among the notes in Isabella Finch's original Junior Woodchuck Guidebook. Bill makes several other appearances in the series too.
  • Journal 3 can be spotted sitting on a shelf in episodes of the PBS Kids show Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum , such as in the episode, "I am James Naismith".
  • Bill Cipher, voiced by Alex Hirsch, appears in the 2021 episode "Bart's In Jail!" from the Fox animated series The Simpsons.
  • Dipper made a cameo in the 2022 live-action/animated movie Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, which was based on the 1989 Disney Afternoon series, as one of the bootlegged toons.
  • Bill Cipher would make another cameo in The Simpsons in 2023. This time, he appeared in the background during the opening of the show's 750th episode, titled, "Homer's Adventures Through the Windshield Glass".

Rick and Morty[]

In its early seasons, Rick and Morty contained several Easter eggs for Gravity Falls, due to the former friendship between Alex Hirsch and disgraced former series co-creator Justin Roiland (with both also having voiced characters on each other show's).

  • In the episode "Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind", when Rick opens up several transdimensional portals to escape alternate versions of Ricks, a souvenir mug from the Mystery Shack and notepad float out of a portal. In "Society of the Blind Eye", Stan's mug and notepad are sucked into the universe portal.
  • In the episode "Big Trouble in Little Sanchez", a depiction of Bill Cipher appears on a computer monitor.
  • On the Rick and Morty Rickstaverse Instagram account, in the Galactic Federation Prison section, Bill Cipher and the hand on Journal 3 can be seen on a monitor and confiscated contraband of the previously seen mug, notepad, and pen labeled '???' next to Rick's things.
  • In celebration of Dipper and Mabel's birthday, Rick and Morty storyboard artist, Erica Hayes, drew a birthday card for the official Rick and Morty Twitter and Tumblr.[4][5]
  • In the season 3 premiere, "The Rickshank Rickdemption", among the multiverse Mortys at the Citadel or Ricks are a pair of Mortys who look like Dipper and Mabel. Alex Hirsch has since dubbed them "Mortipper" and "Mortabel."[6]
    • On July 21, 2017, Pocket Mortys' 2.2.5 update included "Girl Morty," who resembles the aforementioned Mortabel.[7]
    • This same Mortabel made a cameo appearance in the Gravity Falls comic, Gravity Falls: Lost Legends.
  • In the episode "Rest and Ricklaxation", a decaying toxic version of 8 Ball can be seen in the toxin tank.

Series by Crew Alumni[]

Since the finale, several members of Gravity Falls' production crew have gone on to make their own series at several networks and have included various references to the series in them.

The creators of Big City Greens, Amphibia and The Owl House, Chris and Shane Houghton, Matt Braly and Dana Terrace respectively, besides being friends of Alex Hirsch, were all members of the Gravity Falls crew, therefore the series has been a great influence for them in the creation of their respective shows. all three shows have put multiple Easter eggs and references to Gravity Falls and each other's shows, hinting that the four are connected.

Big City Greens[]

  • In the episode "Present Tense," one of the supporting characters, Kiki, is looking at the arcade games, including a claw machine. Some of the plushies inside the claw machine are characters from various animated Disney shows, one which is a plush of Bill Cipher.
    • Also, two arcade machines with the title "Baby Fight" can be seen in the background.
  • In the episode "The Delivernator," a character looking a lot like Mabel, wearing the sweater she gave Pacifica can be seen. Show co-creator Chris Houghton later explained that the character was actually created by a Make-A-Wish kid, though acknowledged the resemblance to Mabel.[8]

Amphibia[]

  • In "Trip to the Archives", one of Ford's journals can be seen at the town archives when the Plantars stack up random objects to help Anne to unstuck the skylight in the episode.
  • "Wax Museum" serves as a homage to Gravity Falls.
    • In the episode, Anne and the Plantars travels to a mysterious roadside oddities museum named the Curiosity Hut, that looks like the Mystery Shack. It's run by a Stan-like frog named Curator Ponds, and there also works a Soos-like frog named Frog Soos. Hirsch reprised his roles as Soos and Stan.
    • Various designs of Bill Cipher are seen in the "Curiosity Hut".
    • The "living wax figures" concept, and Polly melting them, references the plot of "Headhunters".
    • The "Fromes" serve as the Amphibia versions of the gnomes. One of the Fromes said "Shmebulock" as he's freed, referencing the gnome of the same name from Gravity Falls, who is only capable of saying his own name.
    • The clown painting in the back room references Stan's love of clown paintings that was established in "The Hand That Rocks the Mabel".
    • The Curator references "I'm not going back to frog prison" when attacking Sprig, which is what happened to Stan in Gravity Falls throughout his life. He also says, "I go by many names," during his introduction. This is similar to how Stan used fake identities in his youth after getting banned from many states and countries.
    • Matt Braly stated that after the Curator was killed, Frog Soos took over the Curiosity Hut, referencing how Soos took over the Mystery Shack in "Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls".[9]
  • In "After the Rain", Dipper's hat is seen.
  • In "True Colors", Marcy finds a book where a drawing of Bill Cipher appears.
  • In the third season intro, a Gideon plush is seen on the bottom corner.
  • In "Hop 'Til You Drop", one of the art sculptures in the mall resembles Bill Cipher.
  • In "Thai Feud", Ned is wearing a Romance Academy 7 shirt, the game from the episode "Soos and the Real Girl".
  • In "Fixing Frobo", a bobblehead resembling Stan can be seen on a shelf in Anne's garage as Polly plugs in the wires to activate Frobo.

The Owl House[]

  • Dipper's hat makes an appearance in the series premiere, "A Lying Witch and a Warden".
  • In the episode "Yesterday's Lie", it's revealed that one of Eda's aliases during her visits to the Human Realm is "Marilyn". In a DVD commentary of Gravity Falls and the publication of Journal 3, it was stated that Stan Pines was married to a woman matching Eda's description named "Marilyn Rosenstein" for less than a day before she robbed him and mysteriously disappeared.
  • In the intro of the episode "Thanks to Them", one of Willow's outfits has the star on a shirt.

Inside Job[]

Inside Job was created by former show writer Shion Takeuchi, with Alex Hirsch serving as an executive producer. Despite Hirsch saying that the series did not have any connections to Gravity Falls, several easter eggs were found within the series.

  • In the episode "Clone Gunman", a drawing of Bill Cipher on a billboard can briefly be seen on a security camera screen in Reagan Ridley's office.
  • In "Blue Bloods", a character dressed up similarly to Dipper (minus the hat) is briefly seen in one of Reagan's flashback.
    • This episode also was the debut of the robotic character named Bear-O. Although not confirmed, it's possible the name was based on the character of the same name in Gravity Falls, due to both bears being similarly creepy and traumatic towards characters.
  • First appearing in the episode "The Brettfast Club" and throughout the series, a town by the name of Still Valley, Wyoming makes several appearances and Easter Eggs in the show. Although the postcard of it is in reference to the vintage American postcard style that Gravity Falls' logo is inspired from, the look of it and the town itself has several similarities, such as being set in a forested area and having large mountains surrounding it, just like Gravity Falls does.

Books and Comics[]

  • In My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic issue #5, a pony named "Maybelle" appears in Rarity's nightmares, with a brown mane, pink sweater and a shooting star cutie mark. Alex Hirsch joked about suing Lauren Faust, (an old friend) on Twitter.[10]
    • Additionally, the My Little Pony trading card game features at least two cards alluding to the series:
      • The "High Magic" card of character Dance Fever includes some of the lyrics of Disco Girl with the word filly substituted for girl.
      • The "Marks in Time" expansion card "Discord, Dubious Intent", which alludes to Bill Cipher by referring to "an evil interdimensional triangle with a tophat!"
  • Dipper and Mabel make a cameo appearance in Comic Issue #41 of Batman Eternal. Interestingly, Mabel has six fingers on her left hand.
  • On the cover of issue #4 of Howard the Duck, the magic book in the foreground has the gold six fingered hand and Bill Cipher. It was drawn by the same artist, Joe Quinones, who inserted Dipper and Mabel in Batman Eternal. Additionally in issue #6 a man who looks like Soos is seen about to fight Howard the Duck at a gas station. He has an exclamation point on his shirt instead of a question mark.
  • In the Uncle Scrooge comic story "Shiver Me Timbers!" (printed in Uncle Scrooge issue #406), Donald Duck mentions Gravity Falls when he sees some floating rocks.
  • In one strip of the web comic "Erma," the titular character is shown riding the same bus that Dipper and Mabel took back to Piedmont.
  • In issue #28 of Giant Days, Blendin Blandin appears in the background of one panel.
  • In issue #4 of the Darkwing Duck comic book by Joe Books, Shmebulock has a cameo as one of the Muddlefoots' lawn decorations.
  • In part two of the Hocus Pocus & the All-New Sequel novel, some trick-or-treaters are described as "a boy and a girl dressed as peanut butter and jelly...rolling a red wheelbarrow full of candy." This matches Dipper and Mabel's costumes and the wheelbarrow they use in "Summerween."
  • In Dawn and the Impossible Three, the 5th installment of the Baby-Sitters Club book series, Bill Cipher makes a cameo as a toy on the page where Dawn (as the narrator) says "This place was a mess!"
  • Mabel's sweater makes an appearance in the graphic novel "Aster and the Accidental Magic".

Web[]

  • In an episode of the popular animated web series Eddsworld titled "Fun Dead," a girl resembling Mabel Pines appears in a few frames for a television advertisement for the fictional theme park Asdfland. In the subsequent episode, "PowerEdd," Edd flies into a child's recently cleaned bedroom, thus wrecking it. A trucker hat resembling Dipper's can be seen in the background. The animator of the episode, Kried is also subscribed to The Mystery of Gravity Falls' official YouTube channel.
  • Nostalgia Critic:
    • During a review of the 1987 film The Monster Squad, the Critic pulls out Journal 3 in order to defeat "the face of reality," a monster made up of overdue bills and payments.
    • For "Nostalgiaween" 2016, the intro is an homage to the Gravity Falls Main Title Theme. When played backwards, the message says "You really played this backwards? What's wrong with you?"
    • The Nostalgia Critic would also make several other minor references to the show in subsequent episodes, and would even make a top ten list of the best episodes of the show.
  • Dipper makes a cameo in a video by ''The Infographics Show''.
  • In the video "Grave Mistake" on the YouTube Channel of animator Tim Allenby, the names of Dipper and Gideon can be seen along other cartoon characters and real-life actors on the Grim Reaper's list of people who he has to kill that day.
  • In a video by Jaiden Animations titled My Childhood Stories, a character named Mabel is seen wearing Mabel's shooting star sweater.
  • Being a long time fan of Gravity Falls, Rebecca Parham of Let Me Explain Studios has put quite a few references to the show in her videos:
  • Gravity Falls has also made unexpected cameos in videos by mega YouTuber MrBeast:
