Euclydia (or the "second dimension") is the name of Bill Cipher's home dimension. Inhabited by beings known as Euclideans, it was destroyed almost exactly one trillion years ago through unknown means by Bill.
History[]
Background[]
While the dimension is not shown, Euclydia is said to be a two-dimensional realm, one that three-dimensional minds could process. Its inhabitants take the form of anthropomorphic two-dimensional shapes that bump around endlessly within; their line of scope limited to a flat line of sight. Although subject to speculation due to Bill's questionable reliability as a narrator, Bill claimed that he was beloved by everyone, so much that the mayor (possibly his father) declared his birthday a national holiday, gave out free knives, and declared him the "best baby of all time".
However, it is implied that Bill's claims were false, as Bill despised living there. Unlike his people, Bill had a rare mutation that allowed him to see the third dimension. But as no one else had it, they could not understand what he was referring to by saying there was a direction known as "up". Embittered by this, and being the only one able to see the stars in a dimension where talk of a third one was illegal, Bill decided to "free" his people from their delusions and make them understand.[1][2]
Euclidean Massacre[]
To allow his dimension to see the third dimension, Bill decided to put on a show to show everyone what they were missing. However, the plan went horribly wrong. Based on Bill's recount, although incomplete, what can be read is that he could hear screams getting louder and louder, as blood was everywhere. Bill mentioned his hands began shaking as he realized he could not undo what had happened and after the last one of his dimension takes a breath (with a mention of episodes of Family Matters, with some odd relation to mandibles), Bill was left alone, covered in blood and alone in the universe. Although stating that he believes the plan was a success and liberated his dimension; in reality, Bill, in his attempt to show his people the third dimension, destroyed them all and his world, the event becoming known as the Euclidean Massacre.[3] Bill then escaped to another dimension, the Nightmare Realm, and began his tenure wreaking transdimensional havoc.
It may also be noted that, given the line "THE SKY'S ON FIRE. EVERYTHING IS BURNING. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? YOU KILLED THEM ALL.......REMEMBER US.", it is possible that Bill somehow set the sky of Euclidia ablaze, though this could simply be what happens when a dimension is destroyed. The fire that destroyed Stan's mind was also blue, but had nothing to do with Bill's pyrokenesis.
Legacy[]
Perhaps due to the trauma of the event, wanting to deny what he did or the effect the act had on him, Bill was unable to remember the full details of that day and continued to deny Euclydia's destruction, making it unclear whether he destroyed his dimension knowingly or by mistake. When being hunted down by Time Baby, he was listed as the sole survivor of the massacre, implying he is the last remaining being from the dimension.[3]
While manipulating Stanford to build his portal and helping him overcome his anger about seeing a con ad by Stanley on TV, Bill told him to let go of the past and revealed the sole surviving piece of his dimension; a single speck of dust. When asked what destroyed it, Bill, telling a half-truth, claimed it was destroyed "by a monster". After Ford offered to help him find and seek the monster out for revenge, Bill joylessly laughed and stated it would "eat him alive".[4]
One night, after losing Ford, Bill caused a scene at an interdimensional tavern and drunkenly tried looking for his mother, telling her he would be back home from school soon and to cut the crust off his sandwiches. He then asked where she went before he was arrested by interdimensional police.[5]
Ford later learned about Euclydia from The Oracle, a being who knew Bill Cipher. While recovering from having a metal plate put in his head to protect his mind from Bill, he learned that Bill's lust for power caused him to destroy his own dimension, parents and everyone he knew. She spoke of him without anger, but in a way that implied she wanted to see him defeated. It later was revealed she once was part of Bill's crew.[1]
Bill first alludes to Euclydia in "Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls" while showing off his physical form and telling Ford that his tight chains are nothing compared to his home. He says it was full of "flat minds in a flat world with flat dreams." He reiterates the lie that he liberated his dimension and he's here to liberate Ford's. While he says this, he appears to show concern as his eye shows flames and the sounds of screams.
In the sole canon part of the book Dipper and Mabel and the Curse of the Time Pirates' Treasure!, a poem by the Axolotl further adds that Bill saw his own dimension burn and despite missing home, he can't return. His statement, "blame the arson for the fire," hints that his actions burned it.
Trivia[]
- The term "Euclidean" refers to a form of geometry attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid. To put it simply, it is the study of geometrical shapes (plane and solid) and figures based on different axioms and theorems.
- Prior to 2024, the dimension went unnamed in Gravity Falls and its related material. Although not named in The Book of Bill, a Morse code message heard in the song "Weirdmageddon Pt. 1A" from the Lofi: Gravity Falls album does mention it.
- ".-. . -- . -- -... . .-./. ..- -.-. .-.. -.-- -.. .. .-". When decoded, it says, "REMEMBER EUCLYDIA".
- Its name was alluded to in a cipher on Bill's wanted poster in the book,[3] and eventually confirmed in one of the messages of This Is Not A Website Dot Com.
- When "Euclydia" is typed in the computer, the monitor will say "Dimension not found".
- According to Bill, the only way to process what his dimension was like would be if one chugged expired milk while looking through a kaleidoscope.
- Euclydia is likely inspired by the Flatland, a satirical science fiction novella written by Edwin Abbott Abbott.
- It is unknown if previous beings from Euclydia had the same mutation Bill did that allowed him to view the third dimension.
- It similarly is unknown what the life expectancy of Euclideans is and if Bill's long existence is attributed to that or his mutation. In either case, he is likely the longest living Euclidean.
- In the tie-in website to The Book of Bill called This Is Not A Website Dot Com, several words inputted into it mention or reference Euclydia and the massacre.
- When thunder and lightning occur, text on the wall is seen that says "VALLIS CINERIS" ("VALLEY OF ASHES" in Latin). Typing that in will display a video of baby Bill next to two grayed out triangles, one in a top hat and the other without one. Every so often a voice will be heard saying: "Why did you do it?"
- Typing either EUCLID, SCALENE or SCRIMBLES will display on the monitor, "LIFE FORM NOT FOUND"
- Typing EUCLYDIA will display on the monitor, "DIMENSION NOT FOUND."
- Typing in FAMILY MATTERS, one of the only words visible during Bill's description of the massacre, the monitor will display "DID I DO THAT?" (A reference to Steve Urkel's catchphrase from Family Matters).
- Typing in "FORGET THE PAST" will display a glitched block of colors that plays music when clicked. The colors form a color code reading the following:
"TWO DIMENSIONS TWO AND FRO, YOU ALWAYS NOW WHICH WAY TO GO IF YOURE LOST DONT BE AFRAID, IN EUCLYDIA YOUVE GOT IT MADE RUN TOO FAR TOO RIGHT OF FRAME, YOULL APPEAR ON LEFT AGAIN JUMP TOO HIGH DONT CRY OR FRET, YOULL POP UP FROM THE GROUND I BET IN THIS SPACE THERE IS NO FEAR, LOVED ONES WILL BE EVER NEAR ROLES AND RULES ALWAYS CLEAR,
EUCLYDIA WE HOLD YOU DEAR" |
- Typing in "I'M STILL ON YOUR MIND / ON YOUR MIND" plays a POV video of the ocean from a boat. In the background, Grunkle Stan can be heard. There is a single frame 17 seconds in that contains a color code. When decoded, it reads the following:
"SHH LITTLE BILLY WORE VELCRO UNTIL HE WAS SIXTEEN. HE SAID SHOELACES WERE FASCIST BUT WE REALLY THINK HE JUST COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO TIE THEM." |
- Typing in "JUST FIT IN" will plays a video of a family playing a game of Perfection. There is a single frame 17 seconds in that contains a color code. When decoded and put in reversed order, it reads the following:
"ROCK-A-BYE BILLY, PLEASE DON'T YOU CRY IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT, YOU HAVE THAT STRANGE EYE STAY SAFE WITH MOMMY, YOU'LL NEVER FALL AND WE'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU,
SHARP ANGLES AND ALL" |
- Typing in "NAITSUAF" displays a note from Bill asking viewers to sell their soul. Clicking the "Are you ready?" button shows a soul contract. Signing the contract presents a message "PLEASURE DOING BUSINESS WITH YOU." The flame on the candle changes blue. With the candle flame blue, turning the knob on the computer will sometimes play 2 backwards audio clips over the static with the same voice from "VALLIS CINERIS." Playing them forward will state the following...
- "SOMEONE HELP........THE MURDERER'S NAME.........IS BILL"
- "THE SKY'S ON FIRE. EVERYTHING IS BURNING. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? YOU KILLED THEM ALL.......REMEMBER US."
